Possible conspiracy or an easy solution!

Recently my cousin came around to my house with his laptop for me to repair. Apparently he had got himself a virus by visiting a website to download software that scans and repairs any computer errors that your system may have. In his case, there wasn't anything wrong with his laptop until after downloading the software. Once he had installed the software a system scan was automatically carried out and a large list of so called viruses and spyware programs were listed. He then clicked the "repair now" button and was taken to a website to purchase the software to get rid of the spyware and viruses. This software "Anti Virus 2009", only added more viruses and more options to purchase other software to get rid of these new problems!

I have a theory that most of these so called viruses and spyware programs are just annoying error messages that will drive you crazy and eventually you will buy their software to remove a simple error message that is not harmfull to your computer in any way at all. I am talking from experience. If this happens to you, simply type in the virus or spyware name into a search engine and find out the manual way to remove it. Follow the instructions carefully and 9 out of 10 times, you will get rid of the problem without downloading any software. If your computer is running perfectly well, then don't download anything that says "fix your pc errors" or "free scan", these are mostly scams. I use one virus protection called "Antivir" and have never had any problems with my computers using this software, best of all its free.

Anyone had a similar problem?
